Urban ground can be read as a text. Its markings tell stories of imagined structures and systems of order, different pavements tell about concepts of ownership, ornamented manhole covers speak to aesthetic sensibilitie layers of repainting and repair reveal processes of change and urban dynamism.
Walking through cities in Taiwan, the ground underfoot reflects distinct cultural characteristics and social ideals. It points, for instance, to values such as consideration and inclusion, while at the same time illustrating efforts to integrate tradition into the fabric of everyday life.
Thanks a lot to National Taipei University for inviting me.
