Out of the Black
Everything begins with a black square. For Kazimir Malevich, his Black Square of 1915 symbolized infinite possibilities. The same idea applies here: an image-generating AI was presented with a black square and prompted to ‘change it’ or ‘make it different.’ From the four resulting variations, one was selected and the AI was once again instructed, using the same prompt, to create a new work. In this way, the black square quickly evolves into a person, animals, hybrid creatures, and geometric forms, which disappear and reappear throughout the successive iterations. At the same time, a distinctive aesthetic emerges – geometric, surreal, and remarkably uniform.
The fact that the unprompted word “DONE” appeared in the 52nd iteration almost gives the impression that the AI is making a statement of its own.
