Jamaican Ladies
A little culture shock is the reason for this series: The erotic, naive paintings that can be found on numerous Jamaican house walls annoyed me a little, I found them sexist. Taking pictures changed my perspective, first because I practically outsmarted myself: instead of being annoyed, I was happy about any further painting for my series. Then, I often got into conversation with Jamaicans when taking these pictures – they were curious why I did so. I learned that these pictures should celebrate the diversity of female beauty, and that they are often understood with a touch of irony. A bar keeper, who had a naked woman painted on his wall, said that visiting his bar and drinking with him, every woman would look like this, and an elderly lady told me, these were just symbols representing womanhood in general.
