Bali, Black & White
„I never thought I would choose black and white as a photo subject in Bali. Bali, a bright, colorful place. And yet the first thing I noticed was black and white – and checkered. You can see them all over Bali – wrapped around trees, on statues or gates: checkered cloths. I had previously associated them with old kitchen towels or with a modern retro style, but not with a southern, spiritual place like Bali – reason enough to do some research, ask questions and take photos. These cloths are called Saput Poleng, which means ‘blanket in two tones’. The pattern is based on a certain philosophy called Rwa Bhineda, which is about balance and harmony. The checkerboard ceilings show the same number of white and black squares, which together symbolize the coexistence of opposite parts.
